Poetry: Work

The sycophant dance

I watched the sycophants bow low, adoring the new CEO.
These slavish followers of those with status large as their egos,
do not intend to disagree with those with great authority.
These toadies are just puppets born, and parasites, and hangers-on.

You see them everywhere you go. The 'yes men' who just can't say no.
For if they should, it's plain to see they'd lose their popularity.
They are afraid to take a stand against a CEO so grand.
These stooges, like Uriah Heep, are not about to lose their sleep

by standing up for their belief, if doing so could cause them grief.
For when they come to work you see, they're bound by mediocrity
to serve the boss, and to impress him with their smarmy helpfulness.
And sycophants abound in every workplace, all around.

You'll see them out there, be aware, their welfare is their only care.
They'll break the backs of all they meet, so they can stay on easy street
by making the big boss feel great. And their subordinates don't rate
a second glance, unless by chance, they also join the sycophant dance.
