For me, my depression has always had certain signs and symptoms which offers can easily spot. Often a person's symptoms may be quite individualistic but on the whole there are general signs and symptoms. However, when you are suffering depression it can be hard recognizing them as a problem and not a way of life. Often our nearest and dearest will learn to spot them fairly quickly. However, I now understand a lot more of what is going on with me and usually have an idea that it is depression.
DIET CHANGES
Often people will experience changes to their eating patterns with depression. For me, it is often a withdrawal from food . As if I no longer have any appetite. Sometimes however this follows a period of sustained overeating .
ISOLATION
A feeling of being isolated and wanting to be so. Withdrawing into a world of your own and having as little contact with the outside world as possible is quite common.
MOOD SWINGS.
Extreme mood swings are more associated with manic depression or as it is commonly known now Bi-Polar disorder. However if you suddenly find that you can be functioning okay one minute and sat in a heap of tears feeling distraught the next minute, depression could be the cause.
FEELINGS OF WORTHLESSNESS AND DESPERATION.
You may only experience one of these but it can still be a sign of depression. That feeling of being a failure no matter what you do. Also feeling that you have no control over your life. I think sometimes that is were the food deprivation comes in as at least you can control your diet and weight.
NOT WANTING TO SOCIALISE.
Depression commonly makes you feel that you do not want to meet or talk to anyone. It becomes increasingly difficult to answer the telephone and much easier to ignore it. Social occasions can be a nightmare.
INTERRUPTED SLEEP.
Going to bed exhausted and then staring at the ceiling for hours is common. Most depressed people will then feel fatigued all the next day. Sleeping for 24/7 and still feeling tired can also be a sign of depression.
LACK OF CARE.
Not wanting or bothering to get washed or dressed or maybe even brush your hair for days can be a sign .
LACK OF INTEREST
Having no interest in anything, let alone yourself. People, hobbies, work and just life can hold no appeal.
PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS
Incessant headaches or generalised aches and pains which make you feel unwell could also be a sign of depression.
CONCLUSION
All of the above could be signs or symptoms of depression. However they may be a sign of something else or just a bad patch that you are going through. Everyone is different and will be affected in a different way. The main thing to remember is that if you have feelings of hopelessness without any real, solid reason it may be as well to have yourself checked out as you could be suffering from depression. If you see the signs in a loved one give them the support and help they will need on the long road to recovery.
