Act Six Leadership and Scholarship Initiative (www.actsix.org) provides opportunities for students of various ethnic backgrounds to be considered for college admission. Without Act Six, several of these women and men would not have the financial support to attend college. This program is a competitive program which allows multi-racial students with proven leadership throughout high school, to be candidates for attendance in private schools such as Whitworth University in Washington and George Fox University in Oregon.
While it may seem like an unfair advantage to other students to have a multi-racial scholarship, it is hoped that these students provide an enrichment of diversity to the campuses that accept their enrollment. Living in a diverse community allows benefits for ALL students. The reality often missed at Christian private schools is that the world is not only made of white, evangelical men.
These incoming Act Six students are expected to take leadership in different venues such as journalism, theatre, and student body. By incorporating a variety of races into these environments, the community learns to respect diversity rather than continue in trends of racism. If college admissions ignores race, it is likely that the community will do so as well.
Ignoring race is not the answer to the problem, incorporating race is.
