Patience and an entrepreneurial spirt is the first two requirements to starting a home catering business. Thenm of course, you need to be a good cook and good at planning and organizing. And having a good business sense, or learning how to be one would help. With these qualifications plus checking in with the health department so they can check you out, to be sure you are not a disease carrier, that your home is adequately clean and the food will be prepared and stored under correct temperatures, you can begin the process. Slowly.

You need to talk of others in the business and get tips from them, or, for some expert help offer to work for a low wage to get experience and a good send off for your own business. If this low-paying first job is with a reputable and well known caterer, this will be good advertising for you.

They too can help with your acquisition of needed appliances,(cooking pots, skillets, and serving dishes, etc. and be ready to come to your aid when necessary. After that, you should start out small. Begin with small parties for friends and work toward the big time slowly.

Depending on the size of your kitchen and who you can depend on for help, this may have to be a very small enterprise at first. And that's as well, since most likely your home is not designed for cooking for huge crowds. If and when you become successful in this new venture then you can move to a bigger and better business location. The first at home try at catering will save lots of money and if you find it too exhausting, you have not spend all your money.

You will need to have workers lined up that can depend on when emergencies arise and when extra help is needed. But most of all you must have a way with food and know what is easily prepared and looks greats and what can be stored ahead of time. You also need to be versatile and be willing to put up with the whims of customers that often will change their minds at the last minute. You must be willing to say no and to mean no and not be wishy-washy.

You need to be friendly and easy going but never forget that first you are in a business and if you expect to stay ahead you must think like a business person. You will have to keep up with the latest in party foods, what is most likley to whet the appetite of potential customers what edibles will be easier to prepare yourself and which will be easier and less expensive to buy.
