When traveling with baby, a car seat is a necessity, of course. It is not only a necessity, it is required. So you will have to purchase one and take it to the hospital with you. Otherwise you will not be allowed to bring your baby home. So you have a car-seat, you have all the warm clothes your baby will need, now what else do you need for your first outing? Lots of strength, and lots of little helpers to help carry diaper bags, extras on everything.

You are taking your baby for a three day's trip so grandma can see him. You will need to know how he will sleep when he gets there. If he is only six weeks old and this will be less of a problem. If older, you will have to make arrangements for a bed. Grandma can borrow from a neighbor, etc., or whatever.

Now for the packing. If grandma lives in an area not close to a store where supplies can be bought, you will need plenty of formula, unless you breast feed. You will need several changes of clothes and plenty of diapers. Bring water, wipes, tips for cleaning ears, diaper rash ointment. But most of all, you will need to have the telephone number of your pediatrician jsut in case you panic and will need advice. In fact, ask the nurse at the office for a list of emergency aids you could possibly need. Enjoying your trip with baby for the first time will be more enjoyable if all possible worries are taken care of.

And please, don't forget to take your camera. Part of the fun of traveling with baby is remembering the event afterwards and being able to share these memories with the child as he grows. He will be delighted that he was such a hit when first visiting his grandparents and will insist on looking at the pictures again and again. One child I know absolutely loves to see movies made of him when he was small and was a little show off. This may be something to be considered when traveling with baby if a movie camera is available.

No matter how you plan, however, traveling with a baby is not easy. It is often necessary and parents make the sacrifice but there are all kinds of frustrations when getting ready to take the baby along. This is especially true when long trips are planned. Not only will lots of food and clothes be needed but plans on how to keep them clean and fresh while on the road. One good way to seeing to hygiene where diapering is concerned is to take advantage of the changing facilities in such large departments such as WalMart if these are available en route.
