Inspiration for new story ideas may vary from person to person. The sources are limitless for anyone with an imagination. The imagination is power to create- twist things in different directions and never ending with the same thing. I'm not a pro when it comes to stories- my name isn't on the best sellers list. But there are a few things that have helped me.
- Your personal life experiences: Look back at past relationships, was there a different connection- one more intense then the other. Some one you met in a different way or whom had a unique job. Did you have a thrilling experience, like being stuck in an elevator or a store losing power? The smallest thing experienced can be given to your imagination, where it can be twisted and totally blow out of control. All you need is the question, "What if."
- Art, picture and photos: There have been times I would look at a piece of art and be lost in the emotions of what I saw. Stare at a picture, photo or piece of art and let your feelings take control. Look at the man/woman, where are they at, how do they feel, what does the picture say to you? Is that place they're at a thinking spot- a place they go to be alone to think about choices they have to make- and what kinda choices are they faced with? A man sits or stands there looking out at nothing, his face is sad. Why is he sad, does he miss some one, is it a woman? Why does he miss her and where is she, what happened? Maybe it's a woman, sitting alone in the dark crying. Why is she crying, why is she alone in the dark? Is she crying for a lost love, a death of a child? Anything is possible, just picture it's you your looking at and ask yourself questions.
- Books, Articles: Read other novels or articles. A lot of writers read just as much as they do write. Reading causes the wheelings in your head to turn. Views from other people can cause your own views of the experience. Reading can be such an inspiration in itself.
- People watching: Yes people watching can be a great inspiration. Sometimes it just takes a good main character to inspire a story. Go to a park or coffee shop and sit, watch people come and go. How they carry themselves, how they're dressed, how they talk and ask yourself questions. Anything from what that person might do for a living or does he have any secrets. Let your wildest dreams throw everything out of proportion. You have no restrictions.
These are just a few. I really haven't had any trouble with making new stories. I personally have so many different life experiences and my imagination is beyond vivid. I could take a conversation and twist it morbidly into a novel or short story. I'll even be inspired for something new when I'm not even looking for anything. It starts with, "what if" and grows with feeling and imagination. You can create a whole new world with a new race. You have no limitations in the world of writing.
