Buying a car seat is a very important decision and one that should be researched prior to the baby's arrival.

Do an internet search on seats that are within your price range (they can range from $40.00 up to over $100.00).

Compare safety ratings,on models of interest. Do a quick search on the model number and you can access all the recalls for the particular model. Also, ask other parents for advice.

Check for straps that look comfortable and are easily adjustable.

Is the headrest supported so the infant neck will not flop about?

For longer term use, look for a car seat that is convertible, meaning it can be used as either a rear facing infant seat or forward facing toddler seat. This will save you money in the long run. Be sure the particular model is compatible with your car. Some models are considerably bulkier than others.

For the very small infant, I would highly recommend buying a multi-functional baby carrier/car seat/stroller, also know as a travel system. I bought a very nice used travel system and love it, because the infant carrier is also a car seat and attaches nicely to the stroller, which means less buckling in and out for the baby.
