British society and the Royal family have changed so much in the last 50 years that it is easy to see why people believe that the Royal Family is becoming irrelevant. However I would disagree. They have a very different role in society today that is for sure but they are still hugely important on the world stage. A number of Commonwealth countries and other countries look up to our Monarchy and believe it to be a symbol of great strength and power. The Royal Family has so much tradition and history embedded within it that it will always remain a cultural and historical figurehead. Many of London's famous Landmarks are related to Royalty and bring in Millions of pounds in tourism every year. The British Royal Family is also still a figure head for the Commonwealth.

Where I think the Royal Family does itself no favours is in the numbers of 'hangers on' I understand the need for a Royal Family but believe it should be much more streamlined with distant member of the Family supporting themselves rather than relying on taxpayers money.

The Royal Family may not be instrumental in the day to day running of the country but that is why we have a Prime Minister and Parliament. The Royal Family serve their purpose and continue to create tourism, interest and a sense of history and belonging to this country, which perhaps is sadly lacking in society as a whole.

The Royal Family is part of British history and part of what makes us British.
