Understanding the No Child Left Behind law

This 2001 Act was passed by George Bush. Breifly the act means that States and LEAs have increased accountability and flexibility in terms of how they spend federal money. This is intended to ensure that proficiency standards start to increase across all states, with testing for all students in grades 3-8. Essentially the purpose is to make sure that no groups, depending on poverty, ethnicity and so on are left behind in their education.

One part of this Act is to give better choice for parent - so if their child is at a failing school they can get their child into a better school and get help with the travel costs for such a move. Basically this is giving the States more freedom with the money - but they can be help accountable over the poor/good education of children. Who knows if it will work.....
