Being a person of faith, one would expect me to answer this with a scathing statement about disbelief in God, gods, or Infinity. And, while I must confess the temptation to defend my beliefs, that is not the question here. The subject of atheism being wrong is not based on the faith question for, indeed, both atheists and religionists base their belief systems on faith; The one, faith in the existence of a Supreme Being, and the other, faith in the non-existence of a Supreme Being. It is not my place to judge another person's beliefs any more than it is for others to judge my beliefs.
John F (http://www.helium.com/tm/2466 12) presents a wonderful defense of his position and the proper commitment of atheists by writing, "Atheism should be more than passive disbelief; atheism should also be a defense of evolution and the scientific method." Right on, John. The problem arises when the atheist says flatly, "There is no God, gods, or Supernatural Being because I see no scientific evidence." To disregard an answer without evidence is wrong scientifically. It is like saying I see no evidence that cancer can be cured; so I don't believe it can be done. Let's quit trying. I see no evidence of life without oxygen; so I don't believe man can live in outer space. Let's stop the space program. I see no evidence of life on Io(Jupiter's moon). Let's quit trying to find out. The first principle of science is investigation until the evidence proves a fact. Until then it is only a theory which anyone, including scientists, is free to believe or disbelieve. The best atheism can offer is agnosticism which says I see no evidence and, thus, can't know one way or the other.
On the other hand, religionists have no proof for the existence of a God, gods, or Supreme Being either. The difference being that we are not searching for scientific evidence. We simply accept our "theory" by faith. So the best we can offer is our Faith and Hope. I believe God not only exists but cares about me. My evidence is internal experience, much like, what I suspect, is the evidence of the average atheist. By the way, I am 55 years old; my religion is Christianity and my Book, the Bible.
If you find any definitive proof, please let me know. I, for one, still believe in the goodness, generosity, love, joy, peace and all that Santa Claus represents. The word of the sitter is not enough evidence for a scientist.(http://www.helium.c om/tm/246612)
