Second Life: Tips for making money in the virtual world

Making Money in Second life

Disclaimer: Money making is an art and a science. If you want a sureshot, 100% guaranteed way to make money go talk to Warren Buffet or Peter Lynch. The advice in this article is based on my personal experience in SL (I am not a millionaire yet and I have been there for 9 months.) With that in mind, do read my advice as this is based on the lessons learnt by me in SL. You are not obliged to follow it, and I am not bound by your results if you do follow it.

With the nasty stuff out of the way let's delve into the meat of the thing.

1. Why Second Life?
That must be your first question - with so many business opportunities in real life (RL), why do you want to work at an RL job and use the earnings to spend in SL?
SL provides many advantages to blooming or closet-entrepreneurs.
a. The scale is small. You can set up a business in the amount you burn in cigarettes every month.
b. It's fast-paced. Results are much faster than RL. If it turns out to be a learning experience', you can find the faults quickly, correct them and try something different.
c. The setup and running costs are small compared to RL. You don't need an army of salespeople. You don't need security guards (in some businesses you do), most of all you don't spend a whole lot on raw materials. Once you make an item in SL, you can sell unlimited copies of it. Your running costs will be only advertising and shop rent.
d. It's fun.

2. What is business?
I borrow the definition of business from Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad Poor Dad) , - something that earns you money, keeps you fed while you relax in your hammock. If you have to go out there to do anything - buy land, dance on a pad, stand in a doorway, - anythingif it needs your presence in business in order to earn money, it's not a business, it's a job. I won't compromise on this definition. And just like RL, good money is in business not in a job. So unless you are hell-bent on being an escort in SL, read on.

3. What kind of business?
Business opportunities in SL are immense, there's a whole new world out there. People do sell and resell land in SL as a business' because they like it. They spend time on it and get good returns. There are other business ideas that will need some of your time to do them and get you good money.
In this article, I'll focus only on things that get you money without being there after the first stage - set up. Once the business is running, you should be able to go on a vacation and come back to find the
