Losing the negative person in you

Negativity is a darkness. You cannot fight the dark - it grows and feeds on the energy that you give it. The only way to dispel the darkness is by shining the light on it.

Light is easy to create. It is created by awareness. Awareness simply means that you are aware of the darkness. Once you shine the light on it, the darkness no longer exists - it is not possible. Not possible scientifically or spiritually.

Listen to the dialogue in your head. Do you hear what you are saying to yourself? Consciously make the decision to listen to your own internal dialogue for a day. You will be surprised at just how horrible you are to yourself, and to others. Listen particularly for repeating patterns. If you work on the most prominent thoughts first, your negative thinking will clear up much more quickly. "I can't cope with this!" "I will never get anywhere." "Why did this happen to me?" "He shouldn't have done this - its not fair."

Just listening to your thoughts consciously can sometimes be enough to make you laugh at how absurd they are. Hearing yourself think "Why is everyone so horrible to me?" and then being offered a seat by a complete stranger or receiving a gift from a friend can be great wake up. Chances are though you will need to work a little bit harder at first to really start eliminating your negativity.

A great exercise is to keep note of your negative thoughts throughout the day. Make some time at the end of the day to look at the list and to consider them from a more logical perspective. Our negative thoughts tend to be "all or nothing" which is never aligned with the reality of life.

Next to each thought you have noted, write a short paragraph showing why it is not actually true.

Common thoughts of a negative person are -

"Should have/n't" - for example, "I should have known better than to trust him." "She should have said thank you/" Ask yourself why you should have. It is highly unlikely that in most situations you had real knowledge that would have led to a different situation. Or there were specific emotions involved that lead you to go against the facts. It was exactly these things that meant that you should have. The question as to why someone else "should have" done something is similarly simple - understand that everyone is playing the game of life by their own moral and value standards and that we never have the ability to force someone to react the way we want them to. No one is obliged to do anything except what they think is appropriate at the time.
