The real question should be: Why would we buy anything else?

Face it. SUVs are safer than the typical vehicles. Vehicle safety correlates directly with vehicle weight. Would you rather see your child on the road in a four-banger econobox (higher death rate) or a Ford Explorer (lower death rate).

Hmm.

Again - put your child in more danger, or less danger?

Or, put your family in more danger or less danger?

Now, not everyone needs an SUV. But just about everyone would benefit from one. Plus, don't forget, they benefit the U.S. economy - it's an area in which our domestic automakers flourish.

What's the reason anyone questioned why we would buy SUVs? Gas mileage? Well, cost certainly is a concern and, more than anything else, would probably prevent more people from buying SUVs.

Environmental concerns. Ha! That's a good one. SUVs get more mpg than did most cars in the 1970s, and they pollute much less. Plus, we're beginning to see hybrid and clean diesel vehicles on the road, too.

So, to recap, if you want to be safer, your family to be safer, your children to be safer - count on a good SUV. If you're too scrapped for cash, just drive more carefully. ANd if you're worried about global warming... um... find something REAL to worry about, because the news media are trying to scare you (most of us who were around in the 1970s recall the "global cooling" scare of the same nature).
