The case against homeschooling is a weak one. The majority of people who argue against homeschooling make stereotypical statements with no first hand experience with alternative schooling.
I have heard people say that homeschooling doesn't develop a child's social skills. I will grant that if a child is kept at home with only it's immediate family to interact with, that child may suffer when forced to interact with others. However, this is a rare case. Most home schoolers supplement social interaction in a variety of creative and effective ways. I was home schooled, and my parents encouraged me to be with other kids my own age, as well as younger kids, young adults, and older adults. I was forced to become comfortable conversing with a 70 year old women as well as a 4 year old little boy. It is only this type of social interaction that provides for a truly well rounded child. Children do experience interaction with their peers while at public school, but they do not experience anything beyond their own world and this can easily cause children to be incapable of handling situations that involve anyone that is not just like them.
I have also heard people say that home schooled children do not receive as thorough an education as children who are in a regulated system with decades of experience with education. Again, I would say exactly the opposite. When a child is put into a system that simply does not have the time or resources to give that child one - on - one attention, the child can suffer. It is easy for a child to get lost in the shuffle. When a child is at home they have more time for projects and interactive learning. They can breeze through a subject that comes naturally to them and take time to really learn a subject they have more difficulty with.
There is a variety of intense curriculum to aid parents in teaching their children. In fact, a number of those curriculum are more advanced than anything used in public schools.
Also, a child is free of many of the distractions that go along with public school such as bullies, drama, bad teachers, lack of supplies, crowded classrooms, harried schedules and much more. They are free to find their own style of learning, in their own time, and in their own space.
Some might say that home schooled children are too sheltered. That they haven't been exposed to the "real world." Though this is similar to the "no-socialization" argument, it is different enough to be dealt with separately. Someone arguing
