Decorating No-nos
I been thinking about redecorating a couple of rooms in my place... what should i do ? where do i start?
So i went digging for ideas in decor magazines and i came across "decorating no-nos" by a Toronto based design consultant
L. Spence... Certainly this pointed my in the right direction before i end up turning my 2 rooms into an absolute
decorating disaster... these are the no-nos according to her:
1. Wall paper border or paint techniques - Imagine your walls as a clean canvas do not hide the natural architectural features
of a room with these treatments. This led me to one decision, clean the clutter and use neutral colors so no
wall looks too busy.
2. Southwestern decor - she suggests that themes are dangerous and run the risk of becoming tired. Moderation is
the key, if you like the look of South of France, incorporate small touches, show your travels by mixing elements into
your design basics without over doing it.
3. swagged draperies - nothing dates a room more, polyester sheers are also a no-no. Natural frabrics like silk
and linens will fall naturally and look elegant.
4. Asymmetry - If in doubt go symmetrical.
Hope these tips will be also helpful to you if you are thinking of doing a makeover... It was centainly enough to warn me
to get out of the box and make changes without making a mess.
Now the real decision is what materials to use and who to hire for the job, well this is definetely a money issue
which will determine your budget. Thank God I made a decision to start saving money a few months ago from a second
income i have online, working the extra hours have certainly paid off since I have been able to adequately afford a contractor.
