Menopause is labeled when the woman has no periods for about a year. Most women attain menopause gradually. The bleeding may continue for some time before stopping finally. So you need to be sure that you are definitely menopausal. Bleeding could be present because probably the menopause has yet not been achieved. Most women attain menopause between the ages of 42 to 58 years. This is also the age group of women in whom the incidence of carcinoma cervix (neck of the womb) and cancer of the womb lining (endometrium) is very common. Post menopausal bleeding could be the first warning sign of cancer cervix or cancer endometrium. So if a post menopausal woman has bleeding she should immediately visit a doctor. The doctor will conduct a detailed examination and conduct a few tests to determine the exact cause of bleeding. However presence of post menopausal bleeding does not means that you have cancer. Vaginal bleeding in post menopausal period could be commonly caused due to non cancerous causes like presence of polyps or infections (atrophic vaginitis). Intake of HRT may also cause periods in post menopausal women.
