As long as you have the desire to reconnect with these old friends, then there's no good reason why using a medium like Facebook or MySpace should be unhealthy. After all, these sites are tailor-made to such reunions.
There are alternatives to breaking the "peace." You don't have to request their friendship, and then you won't feel obligated to say anything to them. It's fun to see what people from high school or friends who moved away are up to. I've sought out people on MySpace with no intention of requesting their friendship. I just wanted to see what they looked like these days and what they were up to. I can get this information without ever talking to them if I don't want to (and there are cases where I don't).
Any way you look at it, unless the friendship was toxic, there really isn't any reason why connecting with old friends is unhealthy.
