Flower arranging tips

Arranging flowers for some is an intimidating chore. Questions of doubt run thorough their head such as "Is this right?", "How tall should it be?", "Does it look okay?". The best thing to remember when arranging flowers at home is that there is no right or wrong way to do it! You are free to place the flowers in any order that you wish which can make it a relaxing hobby for many!

Whether you choose flowers from the garden or flowers purchased from a florist there are some things that you can do to ensure that your creation turns out impressive. First you will need a few tools such as a florist's knife, floral foam, ribbon or twine, a clean bucket, a roll of waterproof tape, a clutter free place to work and about an hour of uninterrupted time. Most of these things can be found at any craft supply store, well, all of them except uninterrupted time, I would love it if you could tell me where to find some!

Let's pretend that we are using a vase for our design. Fill up the vase with water treated with floral food and then lay out all of your floral materials into three categories: Focal Flowers (largest flowers), Accent and Filler Flowers (small flowers) and Greens. Once you have done this you are ready to begin. Beginners should start out with the greens to fill in the design before they add the rest of the flowers. Assorted styles and colors add texture and depth to your design.

Re-cut each stem of greens and remove any foliage that will fall below the water line and breed bacteria. If you are using assorted greens alternate which type you put in to add interest. As you are adding the stems, pay attention to the angle that you place each stem. The stems should be placed one over the other in a criss cross pattern. This will create stability in your bouquet. Once you have five or six stems of greens placed you can move on to the focal flowers. Take the longest, straightest stem and re-cut, once again removing all foliage that falls below the water line. Cut it to the desired length and nestle it between the center of your criss-crossed stems that are already in the vase. Your first stem will stand up on its own.

Next, continue to add focal flowers each at an equal distance from the other. Once you have finished this step begin placing accent and filler flowers in between each of your focal flowers. You will want the accent flower stems to be just a bit shorter than your focal flower stems as to not cover up the main event of your bouquet!

Congrats! You have just made a basic vased floral arrangement. Once you master this design you will be able to alter it to create beautiful designs in any container using any type of flower! Oh, and don't forget to enjoy each beautiful bloom!
