Are you looking for a way to make a living with your writing talent as freelance journalist? Do you have a computer with a word processor and internet access? Then, you can begin working towards making your dream into a reality. First, you will need to create a writing portfolio to send to potential employers or clients, who are interested in recruiting you for a writing project. Your portfolio should have a picture, an autobiography with writing experience added, and samples of your best articles.

Second, you will want to build an online portfolio, by submitting your work to online writing communities. This way, you can receive feedback on your articles by other authors and readers, as well as receive publishing credits at the same time. In addition, you will meet other authors, who share your passion and maybe able to assist you with improving your writing skills. However, be sure to submit your best work, in order to gain more respect in the writing world.

Third, begin writing about things that interest you in the news, but pick a different angle to write about the topic. Take time to research the topic and spend time reading newspapers or magazines, as well listening to the nightly news. Discover the ways each author discusses the topic and look for new ways you can describe the issue. For example, you can write about how the issue has affected your local community or state.

Next, you need to register and apply for writing jobs that you find through different websites, writing communities, and blogs. When researching for freelance writing positions, you will need to avoid becoming a victim of a fraudulent scheme. Stay away from companies that will charge you a monthly fee to find you some freelance writing work. Check out each company you may want to work for with the Better Business Bureau first and look for complaints on the internet.

Then, take time to visit websites or your local library, in order to find lists of current freelance markets that are available to a new author. Each listing has tips from the editor and publisher, who have explained what type of material that they need. Before submitting anything, read each listing carefully and follow the specific needs of each editor or publisher. Order copies of magazines that you intend to write for in the future, so you will have a better understanding of the editor’s need.

Finally, you can submit an application and your resume to your local and online newspapers that may be looking for freelance authors. You will need to provide several writing samples, which will help show off your skills and talents to a potential editor. This will help you to capture an editor's eye and his or her interest in your work. However, be sure to look over and edit any writing samples, in order to avoid mistakes that will leave the editor with a bad impression.

These steps will help you make a living as a freelance journalist, but it is up to you to continue developing your writing skills. You must work hard to create and build a reputation in the world of writing. Many writing communities will allow you to receive valuable feedback that can help you improve your overall writing skills. Therefore, with research and hard work, you can live your dream of becoming a freelance journalist.
