How to make a living as a freelance journalist

Are you a struggling freelance journalist, who is looking for a way to make a living with your talent? Do you have a computer with a word processor and internet access? Have you created a portfolio to send to employers that are interested? Be sure that you add a picture, a biography, and all the articles that have been published. If you have never been published, include your best writing for samples to showcase your unnoticed talent.

One way, to build your portfolio is to submit your work to online writing communities like www.helium.com and www.associatedcontent.com. Then, you can receive feedback on your work and gain publishing credits at the same time. Be sure to only submit your best writing, so your work will look professional. Plus you will meet other writers, who share your passion and maybe able to assist you with finding freelance work.

Next, start searching the internet for freelance job listings or databases, which will allow you to register and apply for jobs. Here are a couple websites to get you started; check out www.elance.com and www.freelance-writing.net. However, be sure to check out each database with the Better Business Bureau first. This way, you can avoid being scammed, by companies that charges you monthly and never find you work.

So, look into the community or database that you plan to join and avoid the frustration, which most young writers endure. But, you also visit the library or local bookstore, in order to find books that list the current freelance markets that are available. Look for books like, Writer Market 2007 or by Kathy S. Brogan, which explains the guidelines and material that each editor is looking for. Each listing has tips from the editor and publisher, who have explained what type of material that they need.

Before submitting anything, read each listing carefully and follow the specific needs of each editor or publisher. Finally, submit applications to your local and online newspapers, with a copy of your resumes and several writing samples. Only send the articles that will capture an editor's eye and his interest, in you as an author. Therefore, you will find plenty of work, which will allow you to make a living as a freelance author.
