The iPhone did not meet expectations when it came out. Or it did, if we're talking about the expectations to not be as good as the hype claimed it to be. The fact of the matter is that the iPhone costs $600 when other smart phones that are not that different in terms of functions and even have better and/or more features than the iPhone cost anywhere from $250-$500. Sure, the iPhone interface is insanely user-friendly and kind of revolutionary. But even that, which is the iPhone's greatest feature is not really a revolution since phones with touch screens have been on the market for years. What is convenient if I might say is how everything works together (i.e. the touch screen with the simple, intuitive menus). Ohh and how about the iPod integration. Yeah, great, it's awesome. But only 8GB of space. Come on. That's good for only 6-8 movies. So, is all this worth $600?
Before you answer let's check out what's missing from the iPhone? No 3G support. That alone almost shutters all of Jb's boast that with the iPhone you have the actual internet in your fingertips. Sure, the browser, the plug-ins and the support for the internet are there, but if the speed in which you access it is so slow you can barely enjoy it (i.e. it's not like the tv commercials show you) then what's the point? What's also missing is a GPS chip. With the integration of google maps, isn't that the most logical inclusion that should have been there? How about the touch-screen keyboard? Many people find it kind of inconvenient and not so accurate as regular ones. And with no other option, people are forced to have to fiddle with it. Are all the things I mentioned absurd or of high expectations? Well the 3G support is easy seeing that all other smart phones offer it. Same with the GPS and same with the keyboard. I think the user should demand that the iPhone has these feautures. Especially for $600.
So, no definitely think the iPhone is a bad investment. It could have been a good one if the price was lower, and/or the above features were not missing. However, as always I think Apple will learn from its mistakes and the second generation of iPhones should be a good investment depending of course on the price.
