How to recognize who you are in the eyes of God

There are probably a lot of different opinions about you from different people. Some probably think of you as a friend, some as a mentor or guide, as a child, or as a parent. Some might think highly of you... and other people couldn't care less about you. But no matter what these people think, their opinions ultimately do not matter when it comes to your eternal life. If somebody thinks you're a great person, their opinion can't get you into Heaven. If somebody else hopes you slip off a cliff, (thankfully) their opinion doesn't matter either in terms of where you'll spend eternity. When it comes to Heaven or Hell, the only person that matters is God.

So what does God think of you? What goes through His mind when He looks at you? Well, as with many things, the best way to figure out what God is like by reading His word and speaking with Him in prayer.

If you take the time to hunt down God's view of you in the Bible for yourself, that's great. But here are some important points from scripture that you should always keep in mind:

1: God Loves You!
Yes He does. No matter who you are, where you're from, what you've done, how you were conceived, or what you look like... God loves you. You might think this is crazy. But in Romans 5:8, we are given a glimpse at just how powerful God's love is. Paul writes in that verse:

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

A lot of people say "oh, God hates sinners... God hates people who do this... He hates people who do that." Not true. God loves people no matter what they do. It's easy to say "I love you", but for God to send His one and only Son into the world to die for us is a very real act of His love... His love is far more than words. You might just think "so what? He died, what does that mean?"

In Isaiah 59:2 it says:

"But your iniquities have separated
you from your God;
your sins have hidden his face from you,
so that he will not hear. "

As that prophet points out, our sins separated us from God. We could not be with God or know God fully because of the sin (iniquities) that separate us from Him. But God loves you so much that He came to earth to die, so that those sins could be removed. He died just so that you could have the opportunity to know Him! Isn't that incredible? Somebody loves you so much, that they are literately willing to die just to know you.

2: God is our Father!
If you know God (through salvation in Jesus), then you are His child. John 1:12 says:

"Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God"

You become a child of God just by believing in His son, Jesus. As His child, He will care for you, provide for you, comfort you when you are sad, pick you up when you fall down, stand up for you when the world is against you, and be with you when you're lonely. He will care for you better than any earthly father ever could. In Matthew 7:9-11, it says:

"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!"

This piece of scripture gives me a lot of peace... knowing that my heavenly father loves me so much and will give me good things.

So, how do you recognize who you are in the eyes of God? Read His word. It clearly shows what He thinks of us: He loves us... He wants us to know Him... He wants to care for us as our father.
