The problem with many debates of this type is that it is not really a yes/no answer.

Should the government require that just women be paid the same as men?

No, "Equal pay for equal work" should apply to all persons, and not be limited by sex, race, creed or any other qualifier.

This is a tough concept to get a handle on for some people, but many folks who oppose such legislation do so not because they think that women are worth less than men, but because they believe that equal rights should apply to all persons.

This is the same logic that they use when opposing "Hate Crime" laws, since they believe that any murder is tragic, and that the system should not treat the murder of a protected class as a special crime any differently than the murder of any other human being.

Folks with a monolithic view who only see their own plight, fail to see the problems caused by carving protected classes out of society. For each special group that is carved out, another is waiting for its piece of the pie, while others (wrongly) believe that there is less pie for them. The social tension often causes contention, by giving a stigma that the protected class is only able to participate in society because of the government regulations, and that the protected class is not very smart.

Every member of society should be equal and have the same Rights as everyone else. Equality should not be limited to special classes.
