How do we know the Dark Side is more powerful? Simple: The Light Side never actually wins.

Let's examine each of the trilogies separately:

1) Episodes I, II, and III: The entire story arc running through Episodes I, II, and III is orchestrated by Palpatine, culminating in his crowning himself Emperor of the Galaxy. He increases the power of the Trade Federation in order to scare the Senate into voting him into the chancellorship. He creates an army of Clones, claiming that it will protect the Galaxy from the Trade Federation and the other guilds, while in reality he is using the army to instill faith in his leadership. He cunningly acquires the trust of the Jedi order as well as that of the politicians, all the while planning to betray them and wipe them out. Brilliantly, he sways the impressionable Anakin Skywalker, the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy, over to his way of thinking. He preys on the boy's desire to hold on to the people he loves, and in so doing, uses Anakin as a tool to kill the few powerful Jedi left on Coruscant, including Yoda's second-in-command, Mace Windu. When Palpatine orders the clones to kill the Jedi, they follow him unfailingly, and all the Jedi are killed almost instantaneously. Anakin, too, follows Palpatine's order to kill the children who are left unprotected at the Jedi Temple. Only Yoda and Obi-Wan, of all the Jedi who existed just hours before, are left alive, and even they do not come out unscathed. They are forced to flee into exile, while Palpatine emerges victorious. The Dark Side wins, hands down, both physically and mentally. Fear of the Dark Side permeates the entire trilogy, and the Jedi never get themselves together enough to beat it back. They talk incessantly about wanting to stop the evil in the Galaxy, but they never have enough strength to control their fear. As Yoda says, "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to the Dark Side." Because the Jedi never learn to completely control their fear, the Dark Side envelops them and their world.

2) Episodes IV, V, and VI: In the original trilogy, things are a bit less clear-cut. While the Dark Side is clearly in power at the beginning of the trilogy, by the end perhaps it has lost some of its power. At the beginning of the trilogy, the Dark Side is in command. Princess Leia, one of the leaders of the Rebellion against the empire, has been captured by Darth Vader and his men. Stormtroopers have free rein to ravage Tatooine looking for the droids that were
