Anyone can give you tips fora short story participants, my advice is to find the tips that are useful and make them a part of your own personal guide line. Always read your contest rules and regulations. You must find your subject and ask yourself why do I care about this, where does my passion lie within the story.
You should always take your time in crafting your story, it should show natural composition so that the story reads continuously and smoothly. You should always have a thesaurus around so you can use your words precisely and with the proper content of thought. You should keep your sentences together with each object of your story, bouncing back and fourth would confuse the reader. Drafting your thoughts on paper first with ideas of character, conversations and places can help you get your story started in the direction you want it to go. Rewrites are essential and drafting with your own personal notations can help you along the way.
Always spell check and make sure your sentences make sense, this will reflect in your paragraphs. Remember you are the story teller, your passion should be reflected in your story. Research your story idea and make it interesting to the reader also idea in the sentence structure is key to a well written short story. The more you write the better you'll become and don't get discouraged if you don't win. You have already won because you entered the contest and you wrote a short story.
