Reflections: My dog

The greatest sense of joy comes with the sharing the unconditional love of a dog. They don't answer back, they dry your tears and they are an all round best mate. My dog is lovable even though she sleeps most of her day away, which I believe most dogs do when not taking on their duties as watchdog. The faithfulness to the master the household or a family it is a just a protective instinct which all pet dogs have.

Huge and white with spots of brindle splashed upon her rump and a complete brindle mask surrounds her beautiful big brown eyes, her name is Louise. Ears so big she kind reminds me of Dumbo the elephant, except when they are pricked up. I love her so much I only wish I could post a picture for all to see. Her favorite pastime is a drive in the car down to the dog pen each day.

Of course she knows when I pick up a handbag or keys, something is about to occur. Who ever said dogs do not know words was wrong, she does. Don't know her exact breed, but I am often told she resembles a Staffordshire cross with a Greyhound. Just in a larger variety. I adopted her from a life of pig hunting after she was injured by a boar tusk in her hip.

I feel certain she would have made a very good acting dog for a movie. She snores and has a chair in every room in the house, but only the ones which are covered. She knows she is not allowed to get up on any couch which has anything on it. Once my brother came from interstate and when I told him the dog would just keep looking and wagging her tail if there was anything on her couches. He deliberately set out to place a pen on one and a book on another to prove the point and stopped her from getting up there.

Sure enough he soon discovered I was right. This big lump of a dog, might sleep most of the day, but when duty calls she the greatest watchdog for me. She has her own huge basket and often just leaves the room to retire on cold evenings. She needs sunscreen in summer and a blanket in winter and she is very content with that. Loves seafood, pizza occasionally and dog treats and occasionally fruit and if she's lucky, a lamb shank roasted. Now if that is not the luckiest dog in the world I don't know what is.

Every visitor to the house is checked by her. If they have been more than once and with my approval they are greeted at the gate with wags and smiles. But of course the postman and the garbageman don't receive the same response.

I learned early not to leave a cup of tea or coffee down by a chair, or she would drink it when I turned my back. Or, for that matter rum also. If she wants to be patted you will soon find her head pushing under your elbow just at that appropriate moment you are drinking your coffee or tea. Also occurs when I am on the computer too long for her liking. If that isn't enough and no attention paid at breakfast she will use her tail at beat, constantly on a cupboard until you say good morning.

Everyone who every meets her loves her and when shes hanging her head out of the car whist I am out driving, people stare and children in cars point and smile at her big ears flapping around. She's one of a kind, she's all mine, and I love her.
