Knowing how long to feed your newborn

by Linda Emma White

Created on: July 10, 2007

This is for all the new Mother desiring to breast feed your child. When my first child was born I did exactly what the Doctors said and that was to feed the baby ever 3-4 hours hours. I was new at this experience despite what I read in print the Doctor was the god of knowledge and I listened to him..

I had plenty of milk over flowing and for some reason my baby was just just always crying, being a new mother I was at a complete loss as to what he needed. I mean everyone told me a baby only cries when he is wet, hungry or needs love.

I feed him just 2 hours before and he was dry and I have been holding him all the while. I was just at my wits end. My husband was frustrated I was frustrated and poor baby Justin was frustrated, neither of us knew the key to his unhappiness.

Was it gas? Was it this, was it that? I looked up in my medical books I talked to friends on the phone, I just didn't know what to do.

My husband said I think he's still hungry, which I replied but the Doctor said every 3 to 4 hours and it can't be that, so I decided to see if my breast mile could have been the cause of it all and quickly opened up the sample of formula the hospital gave me when we left.

I poured the milk in the bottle and held him in my arms while my husband warmed it up. I put the nipple to his mouth and listened and watched as he gulped and gulped that bottle down to nothing,he was hungry and this made him fall asleep without any crying.
Seeing my son gulp all this down so quickly brought me to question the Dr's advice, after all he was a chunky baby and maybe he just had a bigger appetite then most babies.
Trusting my OWN instinct, when he woke again I gave him my breast and let him suckle away until he fell asleep, then again 2 1/2 hr later he wanted more, again 1 1/2 later he wanted more.

I was unaware at that time but learned as I went on also, each child brings new in site on breast feeding. Something I was unaware of at that time but know now and wish I had known with my first child, is that Breast milk is one of the most easily digested food in the world. It can literal start to digest as soon as it enters the stomach leaving your baby hungry just a short time later.
There are no right and wrong answers when it comes to feeding your child, they will let you know when they are full.

Being that the baby is a new born don't be discouraged by this feeding patter should he/she want to nurse every hour or more, this will change as your child grows older and will then develop a pattern
