Having Spiritual Dreams
Uncle Jim had come to visit. Whenever Uncle Jim came to visit, I had to give up my bedroom and sleep in the guest room. Uncle Jim needed a really firm mattress and the one on my bed was always the one that was offered. I was ok with the guest bed myself, maybe it was softer, but I liked that. Soft is good.
My mother tucked me in and I asked her to leave the light on. I liked the little pink lamp, it threw a peaceful dim pink glow around the room. I could see the many pictures of my relatives that my mother had hanging on the walls. I could just slightly hear the sound of the TV and the grown ups talking downstairs. I was surrounded by family, cozy and snug in the bed. I was drifting off to sleep. No, I was awake.
Something is very different. The room is no longer dim with pink light. It is bright! Golden bright light shining on my ancestors pictures. The curtains at the window were glowing golden. The white shears appeared to flow in an unfelt breeze. There is someone standing by the window. Someone in my room, who must have turned on all of the lights because it is so bright! I tried to adjust my eyes, squinting into the brightness, watching the curtains flow around this person in my room. It was a man, he was stretching out his hand, my eyes were drawn to his face. It's Jesus! His hand is outstretched to me. I was not afraid as I put my hand in His. The electricity! I felt tingling and shock travel through my fingers, past my hand and up my arm into my whole body. It lifted me up to a sitting position and I wondered if He were going to take me somewhere with Him. I felt such acceptance and love, I was overwhelmed.
Everything faded. I was sitting in bed, the pink lamp was throwing a dim pink light around the room. The curtains were still. The gold light was gone. I was alone. My mind wrestled with confusion, my arm was still outstretched and still tingling. I lowered my arm and flexed my fingers. Still tingling. The bed was warm and soft and the pink light was soothing. I felt giddy. Had Jesus just been in the guest bedroom? What did He want from me?
I heard laughter rise up the stairs. The grown ups were still watching TV. Had I dozed off? Was it a dream? I settled back under the covers and laid awake for a long time. It must have been a dream. Long after the grown ups had turned off the TV and my mother had quietly reached in and turned out the little pink lamp, I still laid awake. Going to sleep the second time was surely not going to be as exciting as the first, I wanted to hold onto that feeling my dream had brought me, forever.
