As with any technology that you purchase the iPhone will only decline in value, like cars. I once read in an article that at the rate computers are advancing now, the computer that you are using to read this article now will be considered old or obsolete in as little as 6 months. How can something you purchase be worth next to nothing or less than even a quarter of what you paid for it be considered a good investment? Since computers, laptops, digital cameras, and ESPECIALLY mobile phones are constantly being upgraded and crammed with more and more features, what you buy today will be considered worthless and out of date tomorrow.
Not to mention that Apple is notorious for releasing products riddled with bugs and glitches. So even if you buy an iPhone now for $500-$600 it will have a lot of bugs. Then as the second and third generation iPhones are released fixing these bugs and probably with more features than their predecessors, the first generation iPhones would be worthless if you went in to trade it for a new one.
Homes increase in value over the years because, as we all know, no one is manufacturing land anymore, so it's a precious commodity. Technology, of any sort is a poor investment because years from now it will be worth nothing.
