Buyer's guide to sea kayaks

Unlike whitewater kayaks, sea kayaks are much longer and wider and serve as the perfect long distance kayaks. of course the name does not imply that the sea kayak cannot be used on other bodies of water.

Sometimes they are also called 'touring' kayaks because this would be the choice of kayak for one who is planning a long trip.

Most likely these types of trips will be over calmer water, unlike the hair-raising rides one might experience in the white, churning waters of river rapids.

The design of the sea kayak makes it very stable. They also have great storage capabilities which makes them perfect for the long trips. Unlike the shorter kayaks, the sea kayak tracks very well and will more easily adhere to a straight course. On the other hand, they do not steer very well in tight spots and lack the nimble abilities shown by the shorter whitewater kayak.

The length of the sea kayak also makes it more stable and it's much easier to paddle. It's design enables it to travel further with each paddle stroke. That in turn means that much less energy is expended when propelling the kayak forward. This is an important factor to consider if you are planning on long days on the water.

The extra width of the sea kayak tends to add more stability and control as well.

The price of these models is normally quite a bit higher than the smaller whitewater models and of course the sea kayak is quite a lot more cumbersome and difficult to haul.

It's not unusual for a dedicated kayaker to have more than one model of kayak. This way they are able to experience the sport on many different levels.
