A martini without gin? Churchill, Hemmingway & Hitchcock, would be absolutely horrified. The original martini was made with gin and vermouth until the vodka martini made it's mark in the 1950s, a favourite of James Bond. In the 1980s & 1990s several bastard' children of the martini were born they include the Apple Martini or Appletini, the Chocolate Martini and the Nectarini (courtesy of the television series Scrubs).
There are several recipes for the Appletini, the classic one takes 2oz vodka & oz apple schnapps. Add these ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake, strain into a martini glass and there you have it a classic Appletini.
The Sour Apple Martini is another version, for this on you will need oz vodka, 1oz sour apple pucker. Add the ingredients, with ice to a shaker, shake, then strain into a martini glass.
There is also the vibrant green Extreme Apple Martini, as follows 1 oz Players Extreme Green Apple infused vodka, oz Midori & a splash of sweet & sour. Add ice and all of the ingredients to a shaker, shake and strain into a martini glass.
Of course, you can't leave out your designated driver for the evening, not when there is a tasty mocktail called the Designated Appletini. To make this you require 2 oz apple juice, oz simple syrup & oz lemon juice. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, add all the ingredients and shake well, strain into a chilled cocktail glass rimmed with sugar. The driver will not feel like they are missing out on anything if you buy them a couple of these.
So, there you have it, Appletini's, the Martini with no gin.
