Glimpses of baseball culture

"Take me out to the ballgame."
For most of us reading this, you will know the rest of the words to this song. Baseball has been so ingrained into our culture that we have devoted an entire section of our history for it. Granted, there have been great athletes (some may call heroes) in the past who played the game for the love of the game. Good-feel movies have been created in response to this people and teams. And the stories are worth telling. As young men, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, and Stan Musial looked up in the sky and played to out-duel each other in a friendly manner. They earned little. They loved their game.

That was then. Presently, bloated salaries and player strikes have put a scar on the game that we hold dear. What justifies a salary of a quarter of a billion dollars to hit a ball and then use that money on call girls? It demeans the sport. It demeans Major League Baseball. Most of all, it demeans our culture.
