It is so easy to want what somebody else has. Money, fame, intelligence, or the perfect body are some of the things that we envy other people for. But out of all of those, body image is the easiest to attain. It is the most dangerous to those who are easily driven to desperation. Women are more prone to develop eating disorders rather than men.
As a teenager in high school, I see these things everyday. Girls sitting around looking at the nutrition information on the back of a bag of chips to see how many calories they are going to take in. I have heard the same girl throw up in the bathroom during lunch everyday. I myself have tried skipping breakfast to save myself from the extra calories, only to feel weaker and weaker as the day progressed. It never worked, and with the guidance of my mother, I was able to overcome these issues of being pressured about my appearance.
The problem with teens today is that they are not open with their parents, and most of the time, parents back away when they see their child in a mess, afraid of what they should say to make it better and how it might affect their child. What teens, especially girls, need today is encouragement, not comparison, whether it be from themselves or others. With the pressure of being thin building up, eating disorders could eat up today's youth. And we can't let that happen.
