There is no question that Chauncey Billups is a fantastic shooter and clutch player; however, his game is not the best suited to be the Pistons point guard. The Pistons are a talented team with mobile, athletic, and strong outside shooting big men in Sheed, Webber, McDyess, Maxiell, and Prince at the 3. Instead of utilizing these luxuries to the fullest, the Pistons have Billups dribble the ball aimlessly for an average of 12 seconds before actually trying to accomplish something. Webber has been virtually non-existent in the playoffs, not because he isn't good enough to be productive anymore, but rather because the Pistons haven't gotten him involved, and when Billups is eating up the clock, there is little time for him.

The Pistons lost the last couple of games in Cleveland, not because they were beaten by superior overall talent, but because Billups held on to the ball too much. If the Pistons were the inferior team, then I could see trying to shorten the game, but if the game were to be played at a faster tempo, it would be to their advantage. I don't like the assist statistic, but the fact that Billups had only 2 with the ball in his hands the whole game means that he must have been doing something wrong. A true point guard's job is not to score and carry his team, but rather to facilitate other players. Towards the end of the game, the other Pistons players knew that they weren't getting the ball. On the contrary, LeBron James' willingness to trust his teammates is why he is one of the top players. He isn't a PG, but his playmaking skills are far superior to Billups'. Lebron is lifting his teammates to a higher level, while Billups is pushing his teammates down to a lower level (Webber in particular). I think the Pistons would be better off if they had someone like Jose Calderon or even Jacque Vaughn playing the point, a player looking to get others started instead of himself. You don't need your PG to score all the time!
