My daughter, who is seventeen and mentally retarded, has taught me how to be a better person, a better mother and to have patience. Chelsea was born in 1990 and was diagnosed as a "floppy baby" I just assumed she would get better the older she got.
The older she got, she developed more problems. She couldn't sit up, walk or even speak. By the age of six months, she still couldn't hold her head up.
My daughter began physical therapy when she was one year old, and is currently receiving physical therapy in school.
I have learned that with patience and love you can overcome anything. She has taught me that being a mother is more than just making macaroni and cheese. It's more than just reading a book at bedtime. It's about trust and being able to accept that your child has a disability. She has inspired me to see the simple things in life, like getting excited when she See's a butterfly land on her arm.
She has taught me to never take anything for granted. And most of all, she has taught me what unconditional love really is.
I know my daughter is "special," and like so many other people who have "special"
kids, it's so hard finding someone who really understands what we do each day. It does take a special person to raise a "special" child.
