iPhone's may be a good investment in technology for those who do not have a phone, or a very meager phone with a rather poor implementation of the technology that the iPhone provides. For example I have a phone I paid $20 for that only accepts prepaid service. I stay in the metropolis, where ever that is, so chances are I could access the poor 2G EDGE network that the iPhone utilizes. The iPhone would be an affordable way to take advantage of the latest in touch screen technology and such features as a full fledged web browser. I do not use data much, so I am ignorant to throughput and would not miss the fact that the iPhone would have a slower transfer rate than a 3G phone, or would not miss the lack of implementation that the iPhone has.
iPhones are a poor investment with techies that already know how to get many of the features the iPhone has on cheaper equipment for a lower price, or are intelligent enough to find more creative ways to take advantage of some of its features for free. The only thing Apple has accomplished with the iPhone, is to acculturate newbies to cellular technology about some of the more advanced technical applications that phones can utilize that they normally would not have taken the time or trouble out to find out about otherwise. The iPhone is to cellular phone technology what Windows 98 was to the computing desktop; a friendly user interface that was rudimentary and rather unsophisticated with advanced applications, but good enough with a low enough entry point to make it worth your time if you didn't want to read up on technology.
