As the other articles have mentioned, Americans prefer gasoline cars to diesel cars. But it is not to say that they actually choose gasoline over diesel, but it is more accurate to say that our culture combined with limited choices encourages gasoline driven cars.
In Europe, it is estimated that 75% of automobiles are ran on diesel. This is partly due to the choices Europeans have in purchasing a car but also due to their culture. Moreover, they are more willing to sacrifice a little discomfort and less performance to gain better gas mileage, save money, and lower their foreign oil dependence. Needless to say, with decreased oil expenditures coupled with effective exhaust filters, it is obviously going to benefit the environment.
Here in America, we have a crisis. The crisis is unsubstantiated consumption. In almost every aspect of our life, we are consuming more than the rest of the world. Eventually, we are going to be hit so hard that the notion of recuperating will be far-fetched and we will be forced to live without our overly inflated luxuries. In order to delay such a impact, I feel diesel is the way. Of course, biking will always surpass the economic effects of automobiles.
