When choosing which flat screen to purchase you are first met with a choice between a plasma flat screen TV or a LCD flat screen TV. Each have their pro's and con's and I personally favor plasma over LCD.
Although LCD TV's are improving all of the time they still have a little way to go to get to the same standard as plasma. Plasma has a brighter, more reactive screen and though LCD is a very good system, improving with leaps and bounds due to their extra development in use with laptops and PC flat screens, they don't seem to have the picture sharpness of their plasma counter parts.
An advantage of LCD is that they are able to be produced thinner and lighter than plasma which leads me to believe they will be massively improved in the not too distant future. LCD also uses less power than a plasma TV's an are thought to last longer in overall hours watched before any quality of picture of brightness is lost.
Once you've made your choice between plasma and LCD, choosing your flat screen TV will have considerations concerning High Definition Televisions (HDTV's) in general like pricing, features, compatibility and design. Sometimes the decision is heavily influenced by brand with everyone normally having a favorite they opt for. This can only be a good thing if it's based on good experience of a brand quality and service rather than simply wanting to be seen to own the right labels.
In choosing the HDTV best suited to you, your decision will be governed by the dominating actor of price. With an impressive range to choose from you will find one that suits your needs but you may have to spend a little more than expected.
You must consider your budget. The important but restrictive element. This may change forcing you to save a little more to enable you to buy the HDTV that meets your needs. Being such an integral part of our lives, I would advise to spend more to fit your personal criteria, rather than regret opting for a lesser model two months down the line.
After budget the most important aspect will be the features. Work out how many HDMI ports you are likely to need. These are high definition multi-media interface ports which allow you to connect other hardware like games consoles and HDDVD players. You can also hook up your laptop or PC to your HDTV by a HDMI but you can do this by VGA or DVI connectors which are older system of connection but should be present on most HDTV's. It's wise to estimate the amount of input ports you'll need because lower priced HDTV's only come with one HDMI and none of us like having to mess around the back of our TV sets.
The design. Although nice to be aesthetically pleasing, the design and overall look are the last thing to consider. All brands of HDTV look smart but granted, some look smarter. If you place the design element too high on your criteria you may come to regret it later. After all, you can't plug your DVD player into the design!
A television is an important purchase not only because of the time we sit watching TV these days but we also expect them to last a long time and not be outdated inside a month. It's also probably the biggest, most expensive electrical purchase we'll make. I recently read a review about buying trends, and that said 7 out of ten people surveyed either own or are actively looking to own a HDTV. Unfortunately this popularity and demand in the market will keep prices of HDTV's high.
