Being a nurse for over thirty years, has given me the opportunity
to seeing the nursing profession expand. I became a R.N. in
1976. At that time, it was still very regimented. We wore solid
white, starched dresses, and nursing hats with a black band on
them. The black band stood for a R.N. Whenever a doctor would
enter the room, you stood up in respect for him. The only jobs
available were either in a hospital or a nursing home.
Over these past thirty years, the profession has expanded more
than anyone ever thought possible. In fact, nursing is one of
the most sought after jobs available. Now, a nurse's horizons
are endless. Anything you can possibly think of, more than likely,
has a nurse on staff.
One example of this is amusement parks. They have nurses on payroll
in case of emergencies in the parks. Another sought after job
is for nurses on cruise ships. Now who wouldn't like that job?
Most major corporations have nurses there to help keep people
healthy and at work. They do a lot of teaching on diet and
exercise and keep up with employees medical records. School
nurses have been around for awhile. They keep up with students'
shot and health records; take care of sick children until the
parents arrive; teaching health tips to students; and giving
medications to students who have to take them during school
hours.
There are flight nurses, travel nurses, jail based nurses,
manufacturing nurses, etc.... The jobs are endless with endless
possibilities. Things have definitely changed for the better.
Nurses have more opportunities and the pay rate is much better.
The doctors actually respect us and our opinions now. If you
still don't know what you want to be when you grow up, try nursing.
