Depression overcomes me

Depression setting in
thoughts rush confused and scattered
the pain intensifies
my hands begin to shake

could this be happening to me?
this seems so unreal
like in a dream
where not everything is what it seems

I press my hand against my chest
as if to push the pain out and I exhale
but the horrendous sharp pressure is still there
in the center of my soul

I press my eyes shut
to let the tears escape
but more thoughts rush by
in a hurry to blind my mind

then it all begins to fade
as a small voice in the background
whispers to me so softly and calming
"I love you, Mom"

then this warmth overcomes me
as if her little hands wrap around my heart
with such tenderness that they melt my pain,
then once again she whispers "I love you, Mom"

it's as if she knows my soul is aching
and she rushes to embrace it
she looks into my eyes and smiles
then without speaking she soothes me

I hold her in my arms and don't want to let go
all my sadness has disappeared
at least for that very moment of peace
and my soul begins to heal

now tears run down my face
however, they're not filled with pain this time
they're filled with love and peace
now I can breathe again, I can live again.
