An introduction to vodka

Vodka is a neutral spirit who can take on many different characters, disguising herself as if a member of the KGB. Vodka can sneak up on you, hiding amongst the fruity flavors of a high end cocktail or be straight forward and help you out with a morning hangover.

Putting on a pink cranberry dress with a touch of lime Vodka can seduce you in any Cosmopolitan venue, just as the history of Vodka can sweep you into a fantasy. Russians likes to claim Vodka for themselves from back in 1540 when Czar Ivan the Terrible took control over the distillers and monopolized the Vodka industry. If you look further back in history though we see that Vodka came to be embedded in the Ukraine life when the Prince of Kiev (Ukraine), back in A.D. 988, sort out a religion for his then Pagan people. When the Christian priests informed him that any good Christian could drink, he took that to be his countries new found religion and so the Slavic people took their alcohol very seriously and ultimately Vodka. And so the history of Vodka is peppered with folklore and fantasy in every country that lays some claim to her.

Putting on a more rugged disguise Vodka slips into a red tomato suite with a dash of Worcestershire and Tabasco, she makes us comfortable as she accepts us dressed in our comfy PJ's, as comfortably as Vodka can be made from so many bases. Vodka can be produced from grain, potatoes, molasses, beets, and a variety of other plants. Each country that produces Vodka has their preference or specialty. Not only are Vodkas produced from so many different bases they are also infused with a variety of flavors originally to mask the natural flavor of primitive Vodkas but now more for the added allure to her many characters. There are as many flavors as there are combinations of drinks that she takes on, from lemon to raspberry, from garlic to pepper, some more desirable than others, all worth at least one shot.

So the next time you are sitting enjoying a drink at your watering hole of choice, you might bump into Vodka or she might be sitting next to you in one of her many disguises, just enjoy and let her magic entice you. Just be careful, she can become a handful in too high a dosage.
