Myspace.com first became popular because it offered users the ability to promote their band, art, photography, business, or whatever. This attracted thousands of users away from the already existing sites like friendster.com. It's ironic that these same capabilities are the cause of its slow decline.
Over the past few years of Myspace history the promoting opportunities have attracted a ridiculous amount of spam. Through various techniques (i.e. phishing) spammers get user passwords and use other people's profiles to send messages, comments, and bulletins to their friends. It has become so easy to spam Myspace that users are loosing trust in the friend requests and messages they receive. You can no longer honestly promote yourself without being mistaken for spam.
Myspace has tried blocking spammers but wherever they succeed they end up causing users to enter text verification from an image. When Myspace first started, you only had to do this upon sign up. Now it's required before comments/friend requests (After a certain amount), and before editing your profile. This is beginning to annoy even faithful fans of Myspace.
Myspace is anything but dead, but it's definitely heading towards the grave. Myspace was attractive in the beginning also for its clean look. Recently Myspace littered their pages with Google text ads. They can be found all over groups, home, and other mainstream pages. Luckily they were smart enough to keep them off of profiles. Most users have "layouts" (CSS style sheet html) and other special codes to make their profile look cool. The top banner ad is annoying enough when trying to "pimp" your profile.
In a broader view Myspace has done a lot of good. Hundreds of bands, artists, businesses, and Myspace code sites have found success through the site. The question is, will users continue to care?
