It has been shown that one of the main reasons that young people start smoking is because they are exposed to it early in life through their parents smoking. Once hooked on nicotine they have a very hard time trying to give up, especially when their parents continue to smoke. Also the age of young smokers is now getting as low as nine. For those babies exposed to smoke by their mothers smoking during pregnancy, they can suffer premature birth, low birth weight and lung problems. There is no excuse for women to continue to smoke during pregnancy anymore, as there are specially trained counselors and midwives to help them kick the habit. For those that do however, they often start smoking again when their baby is born thinking that the danger is over, when asked if they smoke they say that it's OK because they don't smoke in the same room as their child but go outside. This is still not OK, as we all know the smell of tobacco gets on the clothes, hair and skin, resulting in the baby still inhaling it. Breast milk can even smell of it. During infancy the young child exposed to smoking often suffers more colds, coughs and ear infections than children of non smoking families. With the public smoking ban now in the UK parents need to be more aware of how they are behaving in front of their children, and put their children's health first or all the smoking bans in the world will not prevent young children suffering ill health and becoming smokers themselves.
