My parents always told me that if I didn't have something positive to say then just don't say anything. Once again I will disobey my parents. Mastodon, and their new album Blood Mountain, should follow in the footsteps of their namesake and become extinct.
Their sound is not original. They try to blend Progressive Metal, Doom, and Psychedelic all into one and they do, to a horrific effect. These guys get some great reviews from all the heavy metal mags of note: Revolver and Kerrang. But personally Mastodon just doesn't rattle my cage, they sound like most other heavy metal bands out there.
And then there are the lyrics. The lyrics are cryptic at best and, after reading up on the band, more than likely drug induced. Now don't get me wrong, I like my favorite bands to be on the wild side, drinking, womanizing, and the like, but when it comes to the lyrics they should at least make sense.
Here are the lyrics to "Sleeping Giant"
"Earth has burst
Mountain flames
Moon beheld
Father snake
Mind control
Has left its nest
Shame on
Bulls roar loud
The fearless fall
Wooden vessel
Broken wings
Caught my killer
In my grave
Shame on
Eyes of grace
Kill again
Trapped in maze
Trembling fear
Head scorched brow
Perish the land
Shame on
A vast calm wilderness
The call to adventure comes
Lead and land atop this rock
Infinite path carved with unrivaled skill"
I rest my case. Don't waste your money on this mindless drivel.
