The difference between an online degree program and a campus program is the same as the difference between one student and another. Any degree program, regardless of its modality or location, is as valuable as the student makes it.
How can I make such a bold assertion? I say this because of personal experience and professional research. I experienced two very different degree programs in my graduate studies, one online and one campus-based. Both had their advantages and disadvantages. I also teach in both online and campus-based degree programs. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. But, I do not rely solely on my own personal experience. I am currently writing my dissertation for an Ed.D. in Higher and Postsecondary Education and have researched these two different modalities extensively.
Both forms of learning are only as effective as the learners in the program. Some students simply do not have the self discipline or technical skills to commit to learn in an online environment. Some students simply do not have the resources or patience with unmotivated learners who populate campus-based programs. When things go wrong, it is not the inherent fault of the system - whether it was online or campus-based. However, there are students who have not been carefully matched to the modality that will best suit their learning needs.
Too many times online programs are touted as easier and more convenient. Unfortunately, they are rarely either, unless you travel extensively and convenience means squatting on the floor by the only available outlet in a crowded airport! Too many times campus-based programs promise interactivity and relationship-building learning experiences. Unfortunately, they are rarely either as many professors still lecture and many students feel disenfranchised by an entitled younger generation of students.
Anyone who is considering a degree program and trying to determine between online or campus based must do some research. The differences will help students understand which medium will best help them tap into what motivates them to learn. The student is the key; the medium is simply a medium that continues to evolve.
