After viewing Michael Moore's new film "Sicko", I found myself feeling extremely depressed and lost in a world that has been steered down the wrong path without any hope of return. I sat there watching the film feeling my blood boil to the surface of my skin. My veins were on the verge of bursting. There was a hole in my chest that could not be filled and my eyes welled up with tears. I wanted to act on making changes immediately.
My hope was that the movie would end, the lights would flip on, and everyone in the theater would uniformly storm the streets blasting at the Corporate America that has crippled the fundamental values that this country was founded on.
What I got was a cheap joke from Moore leading into the credits. A laughing audience stood from their seats and exited the theater, disposing of their empty coke cups and bags of popcorn. They had been successfully entertained for the past two hours and now they would go on with their normal lives.
I was flung into a tornado of depression. No hope left. A system has been created that is in every sense perfect. Not perfect at representing the majority of the population in which a democracy should. Not perfect in representing the peoples desire to have their tax dollars spent on the promotion of life rather than the destruction of it. No. The system is perfect in the sense that it cannot be changed. It cannot be changed when it is run by individuals that do not hold themselves to the moral standard that should be inherent in any leader.
I hope that my thoughts are in-line with the majority of the population in this country. If they are not than I don't belong in this country anymore. If they are, than we need to come together and make something happen. Now.
I've decided to spend this Saturday night locked in the basement of my mom's house. There are a handful of friends partying on Main Street but I can't bring myself to that. For me, it is a notebook, a pen, a copy of the book "kingdom of fear", and the TV clicker. I need to get to the bottom of this. Find some way to make the changes that I so desperately seek.
Flipping thought the channels I came across NBC airing "The Concerts for a Climate in Crisis". Thousands of attendees rock out to Lincoln Park, Lenny Kravitz, and The Police. I hope they are like minded people; not just there for the music but searching to fulfill that inner hunger to make the world a better place. If I leave this world in the same state in which I have found it I will be nothing but an utter failure.
But there is hope. Changes will be made in this world. Change comes over time, but before there can be change there will be devastation. When we are at the bottom with nowhere to look but and still not seeing the sun. This is when my people will show themselves. The ones that stay in on a Saturday night trying to find sanity by scribbling thoughts in a notebook.
