In the entire series, Snape has never done anything to harm anyone. He's been a difficult teacher. He's been a whining man who resented the son of his childhood arch-enemy. He's been a trusted ally of Professor Dumbledore and a defender of those who he should guild, even if they have stronger and worse influences in their life.
Professor Snape said he was under the Imperius Curse when he was a Death Eater and I believe him. If he had been truly an evil, self-serving person who could be a Death Eater, he would have taken a different path throughout the story. For one, he would not have opposed Professor Quirelle. If he had been on the side of the Death Eaters, he would not have helped Harry learn to shield his thoughts.
Dumbledore was aware of what was about to come; he urged Professor Snape to complete the task at hand. With Professor Snape on the inside with He Who Shall Not Be Named, the good guys have a much better chance of success.
Professor Snape is a heroic figure who will be part of the salvation of the Wizarding World.
