New cars are safer, smarter and more environmentally friendly than they have ever been in the history of automotive production. To discriminate against a particular type of car like the SUV is short sighted and closed minded.
The greater issue is why aren't car manufacturers making more of an effort to make SUV's as good as they could be- introducing bio-diesel/hybrid technology, improving crash-safety features, reducing the risk of rollovers....
Look at models such as the Volvo V70- an SUV that has two structural members at the front (upper and lower) to ensure activation of the crumple zones in smaller, lower cars in a frontal collision- or the Lexus RX400H- a car that employs a V6 engine as well as an Electric engine- to lower fuel consumption and emissions.. Why wont companies like Ford or GM introduce such features on their best sellers?
The fact of the matter is, people like SUV's. People feel safe and high up, with good vision and lots of space. An SUV can double up as a people mover or a wagon- making it a practical alternative to a normal car. They are a smart, practical choice. People should continue to buy SUV's- but at the same time lets get manufacturers improving their product where it counts- safety and efficiency.
