Reflections: The Myspace Age

This is about Society seemingly overwhelming urge to label everybody under the sun.
Why? How did it come to be that EVERYBODY must belong to a group. It makes no sense. We seem to want to label everybody and anybody, and proceed to make frankly ridiculous assumptions about them, more often than not untrue ones. You wear black, your depressed and will sleep with anything wearing a pair of Converse. Wear anything Adidas, and (apparently) tonight you'll be harassing OAP's and microwaving kittens. Spend more than 30 seconds on your hair, you're a pretty boy. It makes no sense. Be you emo, skater, indie kid, chav, goth, scenester or indeed Martian, if you live in the here and now, you WILL have a label, even if you don't know it.

Why can't we just be normal' anymore? Admittedly, there have always been labels tossed around like tomatos in a crazed Spanish village, like the punks from yester year. But I'm pretty damn sure that you could always be normal, if you wanted to. Sure, nobody likes to admit to being average', but frankly I'd rather be Joe Bloggs than have a set of false assumptions attached to me, based on what my t-shirt looks like.

That's not even the worst of it. *ALL* of the labels that are attached to us, aren't even based on peoples good qualities. Ever heard of someone calling someone else a Happy'? Or a Funny-as-hell-person'? Darn right you haven't, because for some reason, the fact you wear a studded belt and superman t-shirt overrules any personality traits you might possess.

Is this fair? Hell no it isn't. Is it true? Well, sadly, quite often it is. We live in a world where the blind lead the blind. Where we've become so lost in trends, hairstyles, ridiculously overpriced shoes that I'm afraid this labelling thing is here to stay. And it sucks. It sucks hard. In fact, society has embraced the era of the label. We have websites dedicated to telling us what an Emo looks like. Dictionaries now contain words created from no where by intellectually challenged chavs. Whole sections of cities swarm with sea's of black, Adidas and piercings.

Personally, I refuse to join in with this truly ridiculous war of the label. I am ME. I'm an individual, and I refuse to assume that anyone else is anything otherwise. I may be the only one who agrees. But at least there's someone.

Hope you enjoyed reading. Stay classy.
