Once again, I find myself on the fence with a debate topic. Even though I clicked on the family side, I have to admit that I also think professionals play an important role in caring for elderly patients.

To illustrate, I have an Aunt with Cerebral Palsy. She is in her sixties physically, however, her mentality is that of a 4 or 5 year-old. My father has a perfect balance of family and professionals to care for my Aunt. On a daily basis, a paid representative comes over to her little apartment to serve her meals, make sure she is clean, and to socialize with her. My dad shares in the responsibility of my Aunt's care by cleaning, preparing meals, and taking her out on weekly excursions.

This type of set-up, in my opinion, helps my father to take responsibility for his sister without becoming overwhelmed. Plus, if there are days when he is ill or out of town, the health care staff will be available to help.

My father does understand, and I agree, that if my Aunt would require 24/7 care, then, a full-time facility or live-in professional would be necessary. Taking care of a patient that can not perform basic functions such as eating, waste elimination, dressing, or bathing requires more help than a family could provide.

Taking care of the elderly, along with widows, orphans, and children are important because God calls us to help those in need. We should not forget that our elderly relatives were once vibrant individuals and anyone who is disable is still a special human made in God's image. By showing them love, kindness, and compassion, we are also doing it unto the Lord.
