One man's religion is another mans cult. Even in Christianity's beginnings it was seen as a cult by the Romans.

Granted the followers are a little on the fervent side, it is still their faith. Who are we to judge? One day while journeying down Hollywood boulevard with a friend we passed an event sponsored by the Church of Scientology. One of their members asked us if we wanted to participate in one of their tests. We answered no and they responded with a "Thank you, have a nice day." On the return trip down that very same street we came across them again. Now at this point we were expected to be accosted by them trying to get more followers. Nope, they smiled and nodded but not a word was spoken, knowing we had already chosen not to participate. That little act in and of itself gave us a wee bit of respect for them. Why? Because other fervent religious groups would have been far more pushy and annoying when we came back by.

The thing is that Tom Cruise with all of his publicity and crazy antics has shed a negative light on the religion. Scientology has been around for decades and it hasn't been until recent years that it has become such an issue to talk about. Like all religions it has its pluses and minuses but questioning whether it is a viable religion is like questioning whether or not Christianity should have a status as a religion because it began with a guy and a few of his followers.
